L'Esposizione provinciale di Lucca del 1877

Sergio Nelli

Armi bianche e da fuoco, avori, paramenti sacri, maioliche, lumiere, arazzi, sculture, mobili, bronzi, smalti, libri, stoffe, intarsi, parati, abiti, argenti, quadri, disegni, miniature, tappeti, ricami, strumenti musicali, cristalli. Ibidem 195, pp. 745-1352.

Orticultura e giardinaggio.

Ibidem 194, fasc. A, n. 18, pp. 393-416.

AS Lu, Archivio Sardi 195, fasc. A.

Lucca Provincial Exhibition of 1877

Sergio Nelli

Executive Committee Minutes. 1876-1878

Series of minutes drawn up during Executive Committee sessions which, at least according to the documents preserved in the Sardi Archive, were never recorded in final copy in a special register. Often written in the hand of Count Cesare Sardi, they faithfully record the uncertainties and clarifications which marked the first steps and the progressive outlining and detailing of the intents and possibilities of accomplishing the initiative, within the complicated expression of the topics to be considered. Lucca State Archive (AS Lu), Sardi Archive 193, pages 1-290.

Correspondence with the Councils, the institutions and private subjects. 1876-1877

An enormous amount of correspondence was kept by the Committee, both to increase participation in the Exhibition and also to raise funds. Some Town Councils, such as Camaiore, replied that local economic conditions were so "deplorable" that no amount could be allocated. Others, such as Buggiano and Montecarlo, conceded what they were able, that is Liras 40 each. The provincial centres understood and made use of the Exhibition, above all with regard to their specific spheres of production. Ibidem, pp. 389-781.

Request of Giacomo Puccini to the Committee

The enormous amount of missives from exhibitors and those taking part in the Exhibition also includes the request of the nineteen-year-old Giacomo Puccini who, together with his companion in studies Carlo Carignani, was admitted by the special Commission to take part in the Exhibition with his composition "Vagliami il buon voler s'altro non vale". The letter from the two youths, signed by them but coming from the pen of a man of letters and versed in the rhetoric of humble pleas and petitions, is crammed with modesty and youthful spirit in their asking to be provided with «the necessary means and be offered the suitability of their performance». Ibidem, 194, n. 3, p. 125 e ssgg.

Receipt stubs

Increasing the "antique" part of the Exhibition, which an enormous number of people wanted to attend with items which they owned, included a wide variety of articles, duly described in the receipt stubs issued to the lenders. In some cases it was a question of an authentic "fair", as shown by the notes written on the back of the stubs: «The owner states that he wants to sell it». Cold steel and firearms, ivory, holy vestments, majolica ware, chandeliers, tapestries, sculptures, furniture, bronze items, enamels, books, fabrics, marquetry, hangings, clothing, silverware, paintings, drawings, miniatures, rugs, needlework, musical instruments and crystal glass. Ibidem 195, pp. 745-1352

Horticulture and gardening

Section 28, with expense accounts presented to the Executive Committee, was provided with a printed exhibition programme, a drawing of the material structure of the exhibition area and a tracing of the Cortile degli Svizzeri and the Cortile Carrara (known as "Cortile di S. Romano" and "Cortile dei Tribunali"), where the plants were to be exhibited in artificial flower-beds, adorned and watered by a temporary fountain. Each section of the exhibition strove to reproduce working environments and the products made in the best manner possible, with the aid of meticulously prepared scenography. Ibidem 194, fasc. A, n. 18, pp. 393-416.

Voices from the press

"Il Progresso" stands out in the limited series of periodicals which the Lucca State Archive keeps. Particularly interesting in its N° 50 of year 1, of 16 September 1877, is the chronicle of the inauguration of the Exhibition, which took place right in the middle of the "settembre lucchese" (September in Lucca). Also of interest is the judgement, signed "don Lucio", of the lukewarm success of the initiative, precisely in those fields which the Exhibition should have mostly concentrated on. That is the technical and agricultural sectors, decidedly small in contrast with the expansion of the "antique fair", praised for its abundance and impressiveness.

Occasione di lavoro

Requirements for organising the Exhibition provided an opportunity for employment, albeit temporary, for a host of 125 persons, whose requests were passed on to the Committee for hiring odd-job personnel for the event. Requests were carefully assessed and classified as "accepted", "rejected", "unacceptable", "suspended" and "received late", according to the guidance of information from the Police and, in addition, notes of recommendation and references from parish priests. Internal regulations took care of defining the duties for this service personnel for the surveillance and security of materials and persons. ASLu, Sardi Archive 195, file A.
